Boulder began in 1859 as a supply town for miners heading into the gold camps of the Colorado Rockies, and by 1871 it was incorporated as the Town of Boulder with just over 340 residents. The University of Colorado was founded in Boulder in 1876, the same year Colorado became a state, and has since grown to more than 35,000 students, deeply shaping the city's culture and economy. Over the past century, Boulder has also become known for its early open-space preservation; Chautauqua Park, purchased in 1898, is one of the oldest examples of municipal wild-land protection in the United States.
